Supporters Turn Out Big in Macoupin County
5/18/2010
This past Friday, well over 500 people attended the McCann/Rosenthal Grand Slam Event in Carlinville, Illinois. The district wide event was an all day fundraiser for Sam McCann, Republican Candidate for the State Senate’s 49th District and Wayne Rosenthal, Republican Candidate for State Representative for the 98th District.
The weather was perfect, the food was plentiful and the crowd was amazing. The day’s events started with a 7:30 a.m. tee off with Representative Jim Watson, 97th District joining the other golfers on the greens. After his round of golf, he stayed and joined McCann and Rosenthal for a Town Hall Luncheon, where the three gentlemen spoke with those in attendance and answered questions from the crowd of 100+ people.
After the Town Hall Luncheon, the afternoon flight of golfers teed off around noon. The evening event was held in the “Big Tent” that was set up between the Carlinville Country Club and The Glades Restaurant to accommodate the large crowd. Dinner attendees enjoyed speeches from Adam Andrzejewski, who was the Master of Ceremonies; Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno; Jason Plummer, Republican Candidate for Lt. Governor; Bobby Schilling, US Congressional Candidate for the 17th; Sam McCann; and Wayne Rosenthal.
During his speech, Adam Andrzejewski made reference to the “Macoupin County Miracle”. This event was a huge accomplishment for all of the Campaigns, the Republican County Committees, and the 9-12 Groups that have worked hard together throughout the district to get the word out to voters that they do have a choice in November to elect public servants and not career politicians.
Macoupin County has been a stronghold for the Democrats since the early 1970’s, especially during Vince Demuzio’s career as State Senator. But Friday night was a testament to the changing times. This time last year, no one would have even imagined that the Macoupin County Republican Party would have 200 guests at its annual Lincoln Day Dinner or that there would be over 500 people in Carlinville attending a district wide event to support the candidates on the Republican ticket.
During the Macoupin County February Primary, ballots cast for Democrats decreased by almost 40% from the 2006 Primary and that was with a contested race for County Clerk. Most would say that was due to low voter turnout for the February Primary. That argument could be made if the Republican ballots cast had not increased by more than 80% in 2010 from the 2006 Primary.
With a combination of solid Republican candidates on the ticket, the state of Illinois’ economy, the state of our Nation economy and bad policy decisions being made at all levels, this could quite possibly be the year for Macoupin County to turn from blue to red.
